Knysna Quays

The scope included all marine aspects of the development from the conceptual design to detail design, tender documentation, adjudication, contract administration and supervision. The Knysna Quays Marina Development is a waterfront development comprising residential and retail components, as well as a small craft harbour. Approximately 100 residential units are provided with private moorings adjacent to the units. The small craft harbour provides for 108 walk-on floating moorings for the public and Knysna Yacht Club.

Alternative concept designs of the marina were developed interactively with the other disciplines of the professional team as part of a detailed IEM which involved the relevant authorities and other interested and affected parties to ensure an economically feasible and appropriate development in the extremely sensitive environment of a Lake National Park.

Detail design for tender and construction comprised the following:

  • 1.4km long steel sheetpile quay wall with concrete coping on the edge of the marina canals and small craft harbour.
  • Dredging of approximately 140,000m3.
  • Double deck bascule bridge (8m span) for pedestrians.
  • Walk-on floating moorings (108) with concrete anchor piles.
  • Boat ramps (3)
  • Boat launching dock.
  • Wave screen (200m long)

The contract administration and supervision of the marina contracts in co-operation with the professional project team was also performed.
