Upgrades to the GMQ form part of the South African Government’s National Infrastructure Plans under the Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs). SIPs have been identified to transform the economic landscape and create significant numbers of new jobs and improve the delivery of basic services.
The GMQ upgrades include extending the existing blockwork wall, replacing and extending the existing sheet-pile wall, undertaking maintenance dredging of the existing berth pocket, reconstructing a portion of revetment and reclaiming the area between the two existing quay walls to create a 300 m long continuous length of quay wall. The provision of general bulk services and paved areas also formed part of the upgrades.
