The scope of work included responsibility for site investigations, marine data collection, physical and mathematical model studies, port layout, breakwaters, quay walls, dredging work and a permanent sand bypassing facility.
The work was divided into four contracts:
- The maritime contract comprised a main breakwater of 2,610m, a secondary breakwater of 1,090m, 1,500m of quay walls and 14 million m3 of excavation. Both breakwaters incorporated reinforced concrete caissons at the roundheads.
- The dredging contract entailed removing 12 million m3 of material to obtain a basin depth of –16 m CD and approach channel of -18m CD.
- The sand bypass contract addressed the construction of the sand pumping facility to ensure that the natural littoral drift of 200,000m3 bypasses the port each year.
- The landside infrastructure contract incorporated the provision of roads and services to the various regions of the port.
